Prominent MacMillans

Buchanan Macmillan (c.1750-1832)
From Glenurquhart - a grand-nephew of Macmillan of Murlagan - made his fortune as a printer in London in the late 18th and early 19th century, and was appointed Printer to Parliament and the King. He retired back to the Highlands and died at Belladrum, a few miles from his native glen. His tomb can still just be made out in the nave of the ruined priory at Beauly, Inverness-shire.

James McMillan (1782-1858)
A son of Allan McMillan of Glenpean, co-leader of the 1802 emigration from Lochaber to Canada - explorer and fur trader who rose to become Chief Factor of the Hudsons Bay Company.

Angus Macmillan (1810-1865)
From a Lochaber family who farmed on the islands of Skye, South Uist and Barra - emigrated to Australia in 1837, and subsequently explored the region of Victoria now known as Gippsland.

Kirkpatrick McMillan (1812-1878)
Said to be descended from a Lochaber family who settled in Galloway after the 1715 Jacobite rebellion - invented the bicycle in Dumfriesshire in the 1830s.

Daniel Macmillan (1813-1857) & Alexander Macmillan (1818-1896)
Brothers, whose family came from Arran but moved to Ayrshire - founded Macmillan & Co. publishers in Cambridge in the 1840s. The company moved to London sometime after Daniel's death, and later became an international business. Daniel's grandson Harold (q.v.) became Prime Minister of Great Britain.

Rachel Macmillan (1859-1917) & Margaret McMillan (1860-1931)
Sisters from a Glenurquhart family, born in New York, USA, who returned to Scotland following their father's death - pioneered child health care and nursery teacher-training in England in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Hugh, Baron Macmillan of Aberfeldy (1873-1952)
Son of the Rev. Dr. Hugh Macmillan, from Perthshire, the first elected "Chief" of the Clan MacMillan Society - barrister and judge. Asked to be Lord Advocate by the first Labour Government in 1924, though himself a Conservative; and created Baron in 1930 when appointed a Law Lord.

Douglas Macmillan (1884-1969)
From an Ayrshire family, though born in England - created the successful national charity now known as Macmillan Cancer Support following the death of his father from that disease in 1911.

Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970)
From Massachusetts, USA - scientist and Arctic explorer.

Harvey Reginald MacMillan (1885-1976)
From Ontario, Canada - Lumber Merchant and Philanthropist who merged his business in 1951 to create MacMillan Bloedel Ltd, and in 1968 gave his name to the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre (an astronomy museum) in Vancouver.

Sir Ernest MacMillan (1893-1973)
From Ontario, Canada - organist, conductor, and composer. (Maurice) Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) Grandson of Daniel Macmillan the publisher (q.v.) - Conservative politician who rose to become Prime Minister of Great Britain in the 1950s. Subsequently created Earl of Stockton.

Grandson of Harold Macmillan, the present Earl of Stockton.

Sir Kenneth MacMillan (1929-1992)
From Dunfermline, Scotland - ballet dancer and choreographer who served as the Artistic Director of the Royal Ballet in London from 1970-1971.
